About

Ciara Heatherman professional artist and educator since 2010.

Hi, I’m Ciara Heatherman, an artist & educator from Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Ciara Heatherman is an expressive representational painter, art teacher, and mother working from her home studio in Brackney, Pennsylvania. Ciara grew up in Broome County where she attended Johnson City Senior High School, class of 2006. There she discovered her love of the visual arts and pursued it for her college studies. Ciara attended Pratt Institute at Munson Williams Proctor in Utica, NY for her studio art foundation year. While at Pratt, Ciara decided she wanted to also pursue art education to share her love of creating, so she transferred to SUNY Broome where she received her Associate’s Degree. After Broome, Ciara was able to transfer into the Art Education program at Ithaca College where she received her Bachelor’s degree in 2010. Ciara has taught art in New York for grades 6-12 at Deposit Central Schools from 2011-2017.

Ciara began to feel the call to start a family and to focus on her personal artwork so she took a break from teaching and did just that. In 2018 her daughter Eliza was born and she moved with her family from the city of Binghamton, to a lake house in Pennsylvania. A new fire of inspiration was lit for Ciara and she began to paint her surroundings while taking care of her new baby. In January 2020 she drove with her family to live in Marble Falls, Texas for her husband’s job. It was in Texas when the pandemic started, that she found herself turning to daily painting Instagram challenges and virtual art shows while caring for her toddler at home. The whole time she was in Texas she found herself dreaming of painting the beauty of her backyard in Pennsylvania.

When Ciara returned that November, she set up a studio in her sunroom and began a new body of work she called “Finding Stillness” in 2021. This body of work took a focus on the wildlife and nature surrounding her home. Now in 2022, she is continuing this theme of appreciation, but also including her family in the mix of subjects, with her November Solo Exhibition “Finding Gratitude.” Ciara is currently teaching art in Pennsylvania at the elementary level, while also painting in the early mornings and evenings.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Finding Gratitude” is an exploration of my personal experience as an artist and mother. In the daily grind of being a caregiver, it can be difficult to find moments of gratitude in each day. Everyday we may deal with tantrums, messes, spills, accidents, and chores that take up a large part of the day. This body of work is a reminder to myself and others to look for the bright moments and focus on the good.  While my home may look like a tornado came through, I can still be grateful for my family and the sense of wonder and awe they instill in me on our evening walks or craft time together. Becoming a mother has changed my outlook on life, and forced me to recognise how insignificant the things that may give us anxiety are in the grand scheme of things. It is so important to pursue the things that make us happy right now while we can, we are not guaranteed tomorrow, so try to appreciate the here and now as best you can.

These paintings start with a personal reference photo taken in my backyard. I like to explore why I am drawn to certain subjects, and the symbolism and lore related to the animals, plants, and people in my work during the creation stage. These paintings serve as an introspective medium for me as I get to know the person I am transforming into as a mother and person. The process of creating these paintings moves from messy basic under paintings, to more refined brushstrokes and carefully placed details. I feel this process is mirrored in my experience as a mother, figuring it out as I go, having faith it will all turn out alright in the end.
